Austenitic Stainless Steel

What is austenitic stainless steel?

Austenitic stainless steel is a family of stainless steels with a face-centred cubic (FCC) crystal structure, containing at least 16% chromium plus nickel (300 series) or manganese and nitrogen (200 series). It is corrosion resistant, highly formable and weldable, and non-magnetic when annealed. It is the most widely used stainless steel family.

The nickel, manganese and nitrogen keep the high-temperature "austenite" structure stable at room temperature. This structure causes most of the family's traits: toughness, ductility, and good performance from cryogenic to high temperatures.

Frequently asked questions

Is austenitic stainless steel magnetic?

Not when annealed. Bending or rolling can make it weakly magnetic, especially 304.

Can austenitic stainless steel be hardened by heat treatment?

No. It is strengthened by cold working. Annealing softens it and restores corrosion resistance.

Which austenitic grade machines best?

Grade 303, thanks to added sulphur. It gives up some corrosion resistance and weldability versus 304.

Can I buy austenitic stainless steel cut to size in Malaysia?

Yes. E STEEL supplies plate and round bar cut to your dimensions with no MOQ.
